Need help with cast iron pan...?

Just bought my first cast iron pan (it's a Lodge, so I understand that it's a little rougher to start than the old cast iron brands) and I'm determined to make it work! It came "preseasoned" but after giving it an initial good wash with soap (gasp!) and a scrub brush I reseasoned it 4 times using lard and baking it in the oven. I applied a super thin coat of melted lard to the entire pan inside and out and baked it for 30 mins at 375, then 30 more mins at 425 for a total of 1 hr., allowing it to cool for 2.5 hrs in the oven in between layers. I wanted to make sure I had a nice coating of seasoning on it before my first use. It was black and shiny, no flaking, not sticky to the touch anywhere so I assumed I did a pretty good job. Although I could tell that it was by no means smooth or glassy looking. So today I decided I'd give it a try and make eggs. Though it wasn't a total disaster it didn't go as well as I had hoped. I put a little lard in my preheated pan and smeared it around (did the water test first to be sure my pan wasn't too hot or not hot enough) , and then cracked my egg into it. And though I was able to remove my egg from the pan without completely destroying the over easy egg, there was still much to be desired in the department of sticking to the pan. I cleaned it while the pan was still hot/warm, using hot water, even tried using salt. But I still had to pull out the scrubber and use some elbow grease to remove the stuck egg. And as you can guess, I removed a large amount of my seasoning in the process. I have read tons and tons of information over the past couple weeks regarding seasoning, cleaning, cooking, and caring for cast iron and I feel pretty confident about using it but am looking for a little more help. Do I just need to keep using it? Will seasoning it in the oven as much as I can (when not actually cooking in it) help the process? I really don't mind doing it, in fact I sort of enjoy it (yes, I'm that crazy) Thanks for any advice you can offer!

This 'experience' went on for a year or so (at any time of day or night) then lessened (don't drink much now); very rare I experience it now. Listen to your bod; live correctly. Nope, completely different as far as taste, texture, and how fatty it is. You would use the same measurement for all though. For oil- canola would be a healthier option. You can use 3/4 oil and 1/4 butter so you have the butter flavor. Can always substitute applesauce for the the oil/fat. Either substitute all of it or a portion of it. You really can't tell the difference if you're substituting applesauce for oil or shortening. You do have to use some butter to get the butter flavor.

Why do I get bloated EVERY DAY? Even with dieting?

Why did my dog have a seizure?

I have a 12 yr. old terrier mix. Found out like 6 months ago she has diabetes. I have to give her insulin two times a day every 12 hours, i give her 15 units each time, She started off with 6 units 6 months ago and it did no good cause she was still peeing (and drinking a ton of water) all over the house, so she finally got under control at 30 units total a day, which the vet said was totally fine, and also said she was capable of having seizures sometime down the road from the insulin; but she's been having 30 units a day every 12 hours for the last 3 months I would say, why would i come home randomly at 4 in the afternoon and find her having a seizure? (yes she's fine now, I called the vet freaking out not knowing what to do he said to put corn syrup on her gums and she should be fine which she was) cause she went from shaking horribly and not being able to stand up and laying on the ground with her head jerking back and fourth. So we went to a restaurant that the time before we went we found out that they cook their sweet potatoes in LARD, and not to mention we CANT eat pork (religious) and so we said ok we won't order it! So we decided to come back and just a wondered question we asked the manager to see if it was true and he said yes and he said that all of our food is cooked with some type of pig, pork , lard whatever it is! I mean I DO drink it, I gotta admit, but only maybe like, 2 or 3 times A WEEK. I drink lots of water. Coke is extremely bad. It also causes diabetes, and possibly kidney failure. I don't want my girlfriend to get diabetes, or kidney failure.. I read online that drinking WATER can dramatically reduce risk of cancer, while coke greatly increases it.. The LAST thing I would want is for her to get sick in any way... I try to convince my girlfriend to stop drinking coke and to drink more water, but as a result she generally gets angry at me for 'nagging' at her, and ignores what I say.. I love her alot. I do, I only bug her about it, telling her to stop drinking so much coke and to drink more water, 'cause I care alot about her and I love her alot. I don't wanna lose her. Anyways, lately, she has been telling me that she feels bad, that she has been having really bad stomach aches. I just went vegetarian, and I'd like some advice. I absolutely adore animals and can't stand the thought of eating them. Also, my grandmother is very un-supportive of me. Last time I went vegetarian with Peta's pledge, she kept telling me to just take "one bite" or just "try the donuts with lard- they're a lot better". Lard is disgusting. If you Google it then it tells you diabetics should not use artificial sweeteners as it is full of chemicals and can cause damage. I don't think your levels will come down as good as they have just with using splenda, splenda can also cause cancer? I'm due next month with a boy and I turned 18 last December. I started dating my boyfriend in September and got pregnant in mid October. Question about dog food ingredient?

I thought at first it was a dog biscuit recipe. I don't understand the whole wheat flour as a dog food ingredient. Oats aren't bad, but shouldn't be the main part of the mixture along with rice. Brown and wild rice are often not digested by dogs and they will sometimes throw it up. Grease and lard, as part of a dog food, are bad for a dog, period. What is ground fat? Sounds very bad. This sounds like a recipe for pancreatitis and possilby other illnesses if this is what you would be feeding your dog. We feed a home cooked diet to our dogs, but the diet is well balanced and varied, no flour in it, no lard or grease. I would not suggest feeding your dog any homemade dog food without getting it approved by your Vet. I know a Vet would not approve this recipe. Not meaning to be critical, it just seems dangerous as a recipe for dog food- something your dog would consistently be eating.

I worked at poundland for just under 3 years, An american girl started to work there and she did not like me. I tried to get along with her after all its just work right, But she is one of those people if she don't like you then thats it. i started my periods when i was 13 years old, they were normal in the begining but now theyre off the wall, sometimes i go six months without having a cycle, the last time i had my period was maybe 2 or 3 months ago. sometimes i get a brownish or whitish discharge from down there but i read some where it could be obvulatin, but i dont see how if my cycles are weird. ive also read it could be a bacteria infection or maybe a yeast problem because recently ive been getting a fishy smell :( ive never had sex a day in my life but i am hypertensive and because of that i could be at risk for type two diabetes if i became obese. could that explain whats going on? i know this isnt normal and ive told my parents about my weird cycles but my dad has the insurance and wont take me to see a specialist because his sister told him weird cycles are normal in the early years after menstration. i honestly think theres something wrong, if there is how serious is it? im only 16 years old. i havent told my parents about the fishy smell because its way to embarising to talk about and i do keep good hygene. please help :( i really want kids in the future, god willing, could this stop me from having any?

Lack of sleep wont cause cancer but can give a lot of problems systemically. Partying all night long is OK every once in a while but you have to go back to normal sleeping patterns after that. You won't probably get the different diseases in 3-4 weeks time per se, but your body will start showing signs of fatigue and some of the internal organs will start showing abnormality in their functions.

I've always had stomach problems and nausea since I was little, but I'm 14 now and so much more is going on. They also said I had a 100 degree fever and that my throat was red. I am also not hungry, I've always been skinny but I never really ate good foods. Could this be diabetes? Gaining weight on a diet?

Two slices of wheat toast for breakfast, fruit for lunch, more toast in the afternoon when i get home from school, sometimes with some yogurt or a banana, then dinners kept around 600-700 calories and I try to get all the food groups in there, Monday thru Saturday. Sundays are cheat days, but it's not like I go out and eat a mountain of lard. Then I get a bit of light exercising in Monday thru Friday. I've been sticking to this diet for 10 days and I just weighed in and gained a pound? Any explanations?

Type 1 Diabetes doesn't have anything to do with family history, so that shouldn't be a concern. When I got diagnosed with it, my symptoms developed over a somewhat long period of time. Just to be on the safe side, if you know somebody who has a meter, I would test my blood sugar. If the level is moderately high (140-199) I would monitor closely but not be too concerned. If it's 200 or higher, definitely go see a doctor.

I'm due next month with a boy and I turned 18 last December. I started dating my boyfriend in September and got pregnant in mid October. My family (especially mom) are very unhappy that I'm pregnant especially since I was only with my boyfriend a couple weeks before I had sex with him. I know it was stupid but I wasn't thinking "gee Louise you could get pregnant!" and I should have been. Darren (my bf) is the only guy I've ever been with. He makes me feel so happy and loved. I have very high iron 510plus and other symptoms akin to bronchitis. Please help me with diet or thoughts?

The previous symptoms are perplexing me and so grateful for Canadian HC, but doagnosis is slow and feels like I am being poisoned and my lungs are starting to feel the effects. He saw me quickly and ordered Hemochrom tests and something else but cannot see me till Sept. My weight gain and loss of energy as well as the occasional painful bowel movement is really scaring me. Any thought on diet or how to atleast get rid of this unending cold. I should also point out that I do not have diabetes but the nighly occasional panging pain near ny liver and also kidney areas concerns me. Why Am I Not Losing Weight?

Okay, so my New Year's resolution for 2010 was to eat healthy and exercise and get to a healthy weight. I remained faithful in my resolution, and by the end of the year I had gone from 275 lbs to 235 lbs (a net loss of 40). I am a 24 year old male, and I haven't lost a single pound since Christmas. I figured I would plateau eventually, and I've changed up my workout regimen since then, as well as starting Weight Watchers, but to no avail. I went from hour-long sessions on the treadmill, stationary bike and elliptical 4-5 nights a week to 30-minute sessions on them with higher intensity intervals for 2-3 nights a week. Again, nothing has changed. Now, I know muscle training helps speed up my metabolism and the fat-burning process, but I'm still a doughy tub of lard and don't want to make myself bigger just yet. What should I do/be doing?

My uncle was hospitalized due to diabetes compliciations resulting in the amputation of one of his feet. However, he is in rehab (learning how to walk again, etc) and is experiencing extreme weight loss and diarrhea so bad that he often has accidents. He lost 14 pounds last week, as of this week (reported yesterday) lost 16 pounds and today we got a phone call saying he lost 3 more pounds since yesterday (overnight). As for the diarrhea he is no where near the age to have accidents, and he's 61 and probably has never been screened for colon cancer. Also, the diarrhea has been going on for weeks!! Does anyone agree with the idea that this is colon cancer or do any of you have an idea of what this could be?

Yesterday, I did a blood test and got 8.1 and then did it again about 4-6 hours later and got 8.6. In between that time I had some pasta, a small portion of chips and a chicken kebab. To be sure I had diabetes I was checked again in the following morning and I got 5.8. At around 5 in the afternoon I checked again and found that my results were 6.5 this time and inbetween the last blood test and this one I had a cheese salad baguette and some curry. For as long as I can remember I've always had bad stomach aches and nausea. I'm 14 now, and they have defiantly gotten worse. I met this guy about a week ago and he asked me out on a date. He seemed far too young for me because he’s just really adorable with no facial hair at all and he basically looks about 14. I found out that he’s actually 22 so I decided that we could go out on a date. Something I realized halfway through our date was that he was indeed a she but it was impossible to tell because she has no breasts or feminine shape or anything. My dogs poop is disappearing?

I have little Mini Pin, we live on a very lard 1.5 acre lot with dozens of huge mature trees that support a a squirrel population of about 6 or 8. I try to go out an pick up my dogs poop once a week but I can't find any! I am guessing the squirrels must be eating it, or something. I believe there are also armadillo's in the yard too (though I have never seen them, only the holes they make) and could be poop eaters as well. I failed to scoop her poop for 2 weeks and went out yesterday to find only 3 piles of old poop. I swear there should be much more, but there simple wasn't. Just use the toll house recipe and substitute lard for butter or margarine. I always use crisco for that recipe and it is better than butter since they dont turn out flat.

Help with changing the "fat" in a recipe?

I have a final project due and we have the choice to change the fat in our recipe. Instead of using butter I have the choice to choose forom oil, shortening, lard lard etc. I cant think of a cool "fat" to use instead of one of those. I want to use something different like an advacdo any ideas?

Purple/black spots in the middle of your vision?

My aunt is talking of blind spots in the middle of her vision. Sometimes the spot is black and sometimes it's purple. It's only in the right eye. It comes and goes and we figure it might be linked to diabetes although she's managing it. It's been like this since yesterday and we've been googling her symptoms but to no avail. Help?

When will I get my pictures?

So what happened was, the weekend before last, 5.29.11 to be exact, i went to the Glee Concert in SD. Some guy from Ritz, (his name is Rick), came up to me and my friend and mom, and asked if we wanted to have some Meet and Greet passes because whoever was supposed to get them never showed up and he has been trying to get a hold of them and they haven't been answering his calls, E-mails or texts. So we, of course said yes. We went inside before the concert started, and I met Darren Criss and Ashley Fink (AHH Darren Criss, my idol!) and Rick said we cant get any autographs or pictures, they're going to take a picture of us as a group and we will receive it by E-Mail. We gave him our E-Mail address (on a scratch paper I might add) and we met them, and got our picture taken. But Its been a little over a week and we haven't gotten our pictures yet. It may just be me cause I've been on the edge of my seat all week waiting for them. Should I wait longer? And if I wait about a month or so, how would I go about trying to contact Rick? I don't want to bother him too much cause he has been touring with Glee so far, so he's probably just busy. But still, I want my pictures! :(

I'm 14, could I have diabetes or did they already test for it?

I've always had stomach problems and nausea since I was little, but I'm 14 now and so much more is going on. I get extremely dizzy, my mouth is pretty dry, I'm really sore everywhere, my chest hurts, my arms and legs are tingly and I feel like I'm shaking, I haven't been sleeping well, I always feel like I could vomit, and I have terrible headaches. I kinda feel like i have to go to the bathroom more but that could be from drinking a lit more fluids. went to the doctor today and they want to test me for lime disease and mono, but I really think I should be tested for diabetes. They also said I had a 100 degree fever and that my throat was red. I am also not hungry, I've always been skinny but I never really ate good foods. Could this be diabetes? Also, I just had an endoscopy done, would they have tested me for diabetes when I went there alreay? Thanks!

When I bought my little guy I also got some treats. I was answering some questions on here and i stumbled upon one that said hamster can't have sugar or it will give them diabetes. the first ingredient on this is sugar. they are called yummy drops and they are by nutriphase. Buddy has had about 3 or 4 since i have had him and i had him for about a week. should i stop feeding them to him? or is it ok for one every few days?

Reliable meat grinders for hobby farm lard/sausage production?

I am working on a small hobby farm producing pork/chicken. We typically slaughter 2-3 hogs a year and need a meat grinder capable of grinding meat and fat for making sausage and lard. We will also need to use it for grinding venison and poultry meat. This grinder will see a fair bit of use at certain times of year and need to run for 2-4 hours at a time. We need something long-lasting and durable that will be worth the investment. Hunters, farmers do you have any tested models to suggest? Is 3/4 HP sufficient or is 1 HP better? Is cooking with whole grain flours the same as eating whole grains?

I read the other day that it is healthier to eat whole grains and to avoid processed grains, but then I saw on the internet folks who sell 'whole grain flour' and I became very confused. Please help. I ask this because I'm seeing signs in my health that tell me I'm headed toward diabetes, but can still pull out before its too late. Thus the advice to eat whole grains. I'm gluten intolerant, so I already do my own cooking, but I do utilize flours to make pancakes, etc. and am currently going off sugar, which is very hard to do. Any advice is useful. Thanks.

What could these symptoms mean?

A few days ago, I was cooking dinner talking to my husband, when out of nowhere, I felt really hot, dizzy, and weak. I had eaten breakfast and lunch that day, and I was staying hydrated. Those symptoms hit me suddenly. Today, I got home from my doctors appointment, and suddenly and out of nowhere I felt the same way. Both times, I felt better once I ate something. I am 14 weeks pregnant, and today I went in for a glucose test...but they didn't tell me if my blood sugar was to high or low. All I know is I have to go in again. My mother and father both have Diabetes Type 2. I always get my blood sugar checked and it is always normal (except for today)

I know how you feel :( unfortunately you cannot spot target areas of your body when losing weight...only cardio can do that. Try upping your cardio...maybe turn one of those walks into a jog? and watch what you eat. fat will need to come off the whole body before it comes off the hips. Sometimes we can never really get rid of it, women are genetically made to store fat on their hips. The best thing you can do is burn some calories, eat well and try some toning exericses for your hip flexors or your obliques such as planks, side planks and twisting sit ups. You'll soon notice an improvement :)

I'm a strict vegetarian and I accidentally ate something containing lard?

It was those Asian almond cookies.. I never eat bad stuff and I'm always so careful to avoid animal products and I always check labels and eat very healthy. But I ate these cookies on impulse, and i had 4 and a half of them. Then AFTER I get done eaing the nasty things, I decide to check the label. The contain lard and partially hydrogenated oils! I feel so disgusting and I'm worried about how it will affect me.. is it bad if I only had hydrogenated oil once? Like will it affect weight loss? And will I be okay after eating something with lard in it? I haven't eaten meat in almost 2 years.

normally when your blood sugar gets to around 180 th body goes "oh crap this mess aint good" and attempts to get the excess sugar out of your blood by having the kidneys, blood filter, take out the sugar.. your kidneys clean up your blood a bit and throw the liquid waste to your bladder and you pee. normal ppl dont have as much liquid waste, its also the reason they get dehydrated easier.

Chicken broth, lard, and gelatin are not vegetarian, as they all come from dead animals. As for cooking oil, I can't think of any cooking oils that aren't vegetarian... maybe if you added animal-derived flavoring they wouldn't be, but straight cooking oil generally doesn't have that.

okay well my eyesight has been on and off for a while lets start in elementary. I was about maybe 8 or 9 years old when i got my eyes checked by an optometrist and he said i had astigmatism and he gave me glasses which made me see things more closer and farther away than they actually were so i never wore them. Then a few years later i went to get my eyes checked again but in a different place called 4 eyes and they told me my left eye only was a bit less than 20 so i was close to 20/20 vision but a bit off on the left eye and that I didn't need the glasses. Now im 14 and my left eye is a bit more blurrier then my right when im looking at objects and print from far away. I am going to the optometrist this week and im probably going to get glasses. But depending on my history with eyesight will my eyesight become worse as the years go by? Im really worried about that happening i mean my parents didn't have nearsightedness only reading glasses and my mom has glaucoma in her eyes because she also has diabetes but none of that runs in her family. My sister has a high case of astigmatism she really needs glasses she wears contacts all the time no one knows where she got the gene for her eyesight from either. On the other hand my other sister has 20/20 vision. Alright sorry for my very long paragraph question.

This girl I know and went to school with, all of a sudden disappeared. Everyone said she was but in the mental institution because she is diabetic, the kind were you check it all the time and need and insulin machine. Why does my urine smell?

Diabetes runs in my family. My grandma and grandpa and my mom all have it. None are insulin dependent. A few years ago my doctor told me I was on the verge of it, watch diet, and all that good stuff. I was almost 300 lbs then. I have since lost almost 100 lbs, and I am just not starting to get the symptoms of it. Sweet smelling urine, and when I haven't eaten I get grumpy, but who doesn't? My doctor cant answer why I am getting these symptoms NOW after LOSING weight, and I was fine when I was more overweight? Also, for years I was able to donate blood, but again since losing weight, my blood pressure has gone up, and so has my heart rate. Why am I so unhealthy now since losing the weight??

Oh yeah. I am originally from Mississippi. We love our fried chicken, french fries, bacon, and bacon lard for flavoring. Some of the stuff we eat doesn't even bother going to the stomach but heads straight to the heart. So, we die younger. But what the hey, live a long life eating soy bean stuff and tofu or not living so long and having all the junk food and greasy fried stuff as long as we can. It's a quality of life issue. Is it possible for weasels to get fat?

I know weasels have really high metabolisms, and pretty much any weasel you see is really lithe and slim, but I was wondering if they can ever get fat? I'd imagine the larger species of weasel probably can, but what about the really small ones like the Least Weasel? Can they ever gain a significant amount of weight, or does their biology pretty much preclude it? Has anyone ever seen a fat weasel? And would an obese weasel ever occur in nature, or would they pretty much have to be pinned down and forcefed lard?
