Purple/black spots in the middle of your vision?

My aunt is talking of blind spots in the middle of her vision. Sometimes the spot is black and sometimes it's purple. It's only in the right eye. It comes and goes and we figure it might be linked to diabetes although she's managing it. It's been like this since yesterday and we've been googling her symptoms but to no avail. Help?
