Is religion related with American morbid obesity?
It's correlated but not causal. People in rural areas don't have much to do so church is a form of social congregation and social activity, so even if people aren't religious to begin with, they join churches just bc they're bored. Now, since they're already bored, they also eat a lot too and watch TV, so I think obesity has more to do with being bored than being religious. Vatican City is probably the most religious country in the world, and they're not all morbidly obese. Also, there's poverty in the rural areas, and poor people tend to be drawn to fast food that is cheap per meal, but it makes you so hungry with no nutrition that you wind up spending as much as you would on a filet mignon for 3 fast food meals.
